An unassuming shy man whose deeds became the stuff of legend, Audie Leon Murphy went from hardship as the son of poor sharecroppers, to the horrors of war, to acclaim as this nation's most decorated combat soldier. Audie Leon Murphy was born on 20 June 1925 near Kingston, Texas. Audie rose to national fame as the most decorated United States combat soldier during the Second World War. Among his 33 citations and decorations was the Medal of Honor, the highest military wards for bravery that can be bestowed to any one individual for "conspicuous gallantry and bravery beyond the call of duty." He also received every decoration for valor that his country had to offer. Some of them more than once, including decorations by Belgiam and France. Audie accomplished all of this before most of his contemporaries had even finished school.
