Along with the Coast Guard specific training, Coasties are now venturing into areas of military training that have historically been the DOD's franchise. The Coast Guard magazine July 2005 article by PA1 Sennott, "Convoy Training: Prepares Coast Guardsmen for Overseas Deployment" talks about one of these new ventures. The article covers the training of Port Security Unit 313 [PSU 313] at the Coast Guard Special Missions Training Center, Camp Lejuene, N.C., on Convoy Operations (10-13). The Coast Guard has both land and water based assets in the Persian Gulf for the Iraq War, requiring travel through the host country. Convoy operation has become a staple with all the ambushes taking place over in the Middle East and the Coast Guard's need to protect its own was great. So once again, Petty officers took up a new job description for Homeland Defense.
