The evolution of the sergeant major has been a long and successful story. The position has evolved from the rudimentary running of units to testifying in front of congress on behalf of all soldiers in the Army. Sergeants Major have evolved from undereducated soldiers to highly educated warriors serving as highly respected advisors in both command and staff positions. They have pushed the NCO corps into the 21st century and firmly imbedded themselves in the very fabric that makes up the army. As the saying goes "every soldier has an NCO" which is a fact, however, I believe that every soldier also has a Sergeant Major.
