The Koreans with great joy and relief welcomed the defeat of Japan by the United States during World War 2, however their joy would be short lived. The defeat of Japan was thought to encourage and bring about liberation and independence for the Korean peninsula and the Korean people who had fought so hard. The efforts of the Koreans to establish an independent government were frustrated by the United States backing South Korea and the Soviet Union occupying and backing North Korea. The series of political wrangling show the events that led out nation to war. In November of 1947 the Unites Nations (UN) general assembly adopted a resolution which called for general elections to be held under the supervision of the UN commission, however the Soviet Union refused to comply with the resolution denying the UN access to the Northern part of Korea, in spite of this the UN adopted a new policy calling for elections to be held in "accessible" areas which were determined to be the Southern portion of Korea. On May 10th 1948 the first elections took place in the area South of the 38th parallel the government of the Republic of Korea was inaugurated on 15 August 1948 during this same time a Communist regime was set up in the North appointing Kim il Sung as the Stalinist ruler with absolute power....
