Military leaders place a great deal of emphasis on making soldiers aware of the adverse outcomes of alcohol related infractions, although alcohol remains an integral part of most military functions. Alcohol consumption is so prevalent and available in the military that I question whether we are encouraging our young soldiers to begin drinking as soon as legally allowable. The effects of alcohol abuse can be devastating to a soldier and their family due to legal, financial, and social outcomes. Alcohol abuse also affects the readiness of the individual soldier and their unit.
