Edward Rose was a black explorer and fur trapper that served as Chief of the Crows in the 1800s. James Beckwourth a black mountain man found a pass in the Sierra Nevada Mountains that was later called Beckwourth's Pass. Thousands of settlers used this pass to travel to California. Second Lieutenant Henry O. Flipper was the first black graduate of The United States Military Academy at West Point. He was the only black officer out of the approximately 2,100 during that time. Sergeant Emanuel Stance was the first Buffalo Soldier to win The Congressional Medal of Honor. In 1898, the 9th and 10th Calvary fought in the Spanish-American War in Cuba. They helped save Theodore Roosevelt's Rough Riders and won five Congressional Medal of Honors for their valor. These are a few additional Congressional Medal of Honor winners during the frontier days.
