We've seen in movies such as "Glory", "The Buffalo Soldier" and others movies showing blacks fighting on the union side during the Civil War. However, there are other black soldiers who fought in the war that history tends to forget: The Black Confederate Soldiers. Many historians will agree that blacks served by the thousands in the Confederate Army. They will dispute, however, that these blacks served as soldiers, and will dismiss their service as that of servants attached to the Army, but not soldiers in the Army. This research paper does not attempt to chronicle the full range of black contributions to America's military; for they are substantial. Rather, it presents a brief overview which touches upon the duties of black confederate soldier, the weapons they used, the heroes that were recognized and the discipline that were instilled during the Civil War. This research paper will show supporting data that black Southerners served as soldiers in the Army, not just with the Southern Army. That evidence is clear: Black Confederates served by the thousands, and they served as soldiers.
