Ethics, when applied, are a great tool for the Army leader to use when making a decision. Leaders need a 'baseline of truth' in order to reason through a problem. The Army Values are a general guide for all Soldiers to use when making a decision. Do Army values have more than one definition? Is discipline a leadership characteristic that is malleable? Ethical decisions made by Army leaders must be uniform across the ranks, but are the 'truths' used to reason through the Army ethics, always applied uniformly. Often events will happen that cause leaders to manipulate the system for the greater good of the person or event, usually something that produces a positive outcome for that person but is it of greater worth than the truth? Truth is not human flesh and blood, but it is a core ideal used by all people to distinguish right from wrong. Laws and regulations are in place in our society and the Army, as a guide for conduct and interaction. The only way truth will always prevail is when discipline and the conviction and acknowledgement that truth brings, manifests itself through the application of the laws and regulations regardless of the cost. Discipline cannot exist if the difference between right and wrong is not known. Truth, honesty, and discipline are all dependent upon one another in order for the resolution of truth to exist and the application of Army ethics to prevail when making a decision.
