The role of the NCO is as varied as the as the as the professions and units that make up the Army. Depending on the job held, the unit of assignment and the state of that units the role of the NCOs can be dramatically different from one NCO to another. Some NCOs play a primary role in the acquisition, testing and fielding of equipment, the development of doctrine, SOPs and METL. Many of the responsibilities with which NCOs are charged today were traditionally held by officers in earlier times. Today's roles for NCOs are have grown in complexity, scope and responsibility, and continue to do so exponentially with the passage of each year and the growth of technology and the socio-economic of the U.S. and the rest of the world. The multitudes of roles and responsibilities with which today's NCOs experience every day are a vastly different from the Army's first Non-Commissioned Officers.
