World War I and the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT) have a lot of similarities. In both wars the United States had to grow their fighting force to meet the wars requirements. The United States had to modernize their equipment to provide additional protection. Finally, the United States had to change their tactics to meet the demands on the battle field. Each one of these areas was a major part of the United States' success in both wars. Contrary to belief, the United States needs to be more proactive in preparing for future wars than reactive after the war begins.
