All five services need to study to become effective leaders and prepare better for combat by understanding the basic principles in combat. To be a well rounded leader you must have a plush tool box of experience to choose from when dealing with different situations on and off the battlefield. Studying the history of a conflict or battle gives useful insight on how to accomplish the mission or which avenues we can discount based on our tool box. Studying military history is a way for our predecessors to impart their experience or lessons learned from a lack of experience. It is in our best interest to have this understanding of how past leaders conducted themselves and how they applied their knowledge to various campaigns; to not repeat their mistakes and help make us better leaders.
