When conducting military operations its imperative Leaders and Soldiers have a basic understanding of the local culture. The importance increases dramatically when fighting counter-insurgency. Failure to understand the culture and ideologies of the local populace can escalate or prolong a war or conflict. This was evident during both the Philippine and Vietnam War.
