The United States employed forces to conduct counter-insurgency operations domestically and internationally. The country learned many valuable lessons throughout its short history. Several notable case studies include the Civil War and the reconstruction period as well as the operations in the Philippines in 1899-1902. Many of the successful tactics on both sides have provided critical information to develop appropriate countermeasures and doctrine for both sides. Equally, the documentation of unsuccessful tactics is important to prevent subsequent failures.
