The Battle of Kasserine Pass took place 30 Jan-22 Feb 1943, with the 1st Armored Division made up of draftees. They pioneered tank gunnery and used forward -observer techniques developed after World War I. By 1941 with only 66 medium tanks on hand the units managed to be engaged in day and night training maneuvers, practicing maintenance, logistics and administrative operations in field conditions. The descriptions of the Battle of Kasserine Pass and the fight of Task Force Smith with the 24th Division from America's First Battles are examples of how the U.S. Army has been unprepared for war and the factors affecting its readiness.
