Throughout United States military history several examples show us how unprepared the armed forces were at the outbreak of hostilities. Analysis of the defeats at Kasserine Pass in 1943 and the battle of Osan seven years later point to a government unwilling to maintain a strong and prepared force. The study of these two battles compared to our current readiness posture indicates the United States Government did learn from history and the sacrifices of the poorly trained, poorly equipped Soldiers who gave the ultimate sacrifice in these opening battles. The composition and capabilities of our armed forces underwent necessary changes since the end of Korea. Despite these changes, the Armed Forces of the United States are more capable and better prepared now than at any other time in our history.
