Thesis: Homosexual conduct in the Army can be very polarizing if gays and lesbians are allowed to openly serve, and pose the question whether Soldiers should be judged solely on their sexual orientation or on the basis of their skill sets to effectively serve the country. Abstract: There have been homosexuals serving in the U.S. Army since its inception in 1775. They have served honorably and with distinction in a variety of professional specialties. Many think open homosexuality is incompatible to the Army way of life. Others think it's time to implement a new policy of allowing homosexuals to serve openly. It is certainly true that many service members don't want gays and lesbians to serve in fear of harming unit morale. Cases reported over the last decade have proven to be a roller coaster of details. As military leaders examine what's best for a nation at war, they'll also decide the fate of the "Don't ask, Don't tell" policy for years to come.
