As a result of the United Nation's ineffective leadership in peacekeeping operations, the United States frequently assumes the lead role in establishing security, stability, humanitarian aid, and protecting human rights around the globe. With the War on Terror moving into its sixth year, the United States continues to focus large amounts of money, time, and effort on peacekeeping operations due to past failures and ineffective leadership strategies of the United Nations. Poor leadership in Somalia during the early 1990s resulted in a present day lawless country where the United States is once again called on by the international community for help in fighting piracy and terror. This, and other examples of leadership and policy failure cited in the pages that follow, show that the present United Nations has acted timidly, shown poor judgment, and refuses to adopt much needed reforms in regards to peacekeeping, the safeguarding of human rights, and humanitarian aid. As a result, the United States must frequently assume this leadership role.
