Combat Service and Combat Service Support contracting have been normal in the Army since the Revolutionary War. Building readiness does not depend on increasing the number of contractors in Iraq. Army readiness depends on the number of Soldiers who are trained and ready to deploy to complete the commanders mission. Contractors are a valuable asset to mission accomplishment; however, increasing numbers increases the burden placed on Soldiers and the Army has lost the critical skill of taking care of its own.
