The U.S. Army has been involved in homeland defense and homeland security since its inception. In recent years, it has played an integral part in the development of the United States Northern Command (USNORTHCOM) and provides the majority of forces for subordinate commands and tasks forces. USNORTHCOM has made great strides since 2003 in developing the command and control needed for an organization of its size and scope of mission. However, USNORTHCOM does not maintain the ready assets needed to fulfill various requirements and must rely on volunteer units to support it. The Army is undergoing its greatest transformation since World War II, and the question remains; is the Army doing enough for homeland security?
