Conducting an effective counterinsurgency provides unique challenges to a democracy-based government primarily due to its requirement to maintain the support and resolve of its people. Since insurgencies are by nature long-term struggles, a democratically-elected government must tailor its strategy in fighting them so as to protect the resolve of its people while countering insurgent attempts to undermine and outlast it.
