The Battle of Midway, considered the decisive battle of WWII, was fought in the Pacific, near the Central Pacific island of Midway. From 4-7 June 1942, U.S. forces fought off a major Japanese offensive. Japanese forces had been capturing territory throughout Asia and the Pacific unchecked until this battle. The Japanese also planned to capture Midway to use as an advance base to entrap and destroy what remained of the U.S. Pacific Fleet. The success of U.S. intelligence allowed the U.S. Pacific Fleet to surprise the Japanese forces at Midway. The U.S. destroyed four Japanese carriers, while only losing of one carrier. The victory at Midway allowed the Americans and their Allies to finally take the offensive in the Pacific theatre.
