As an organization, the Army has made great strides in regards to the consideration of others through education and training programs; however, religious discrimination is still prevalent throughout the Army. Leaders at all levels have inadvertently endorsed certain practices and actions that run contrary to the Army's policy on religious discrimination. Although they may not intend to promote discrimination, through their action or inaction their impact on the unit does just that. The Army defines religious discrimination as any action, intentional or unintentional, that unlawfully or unjustly results in unequal treatment of a person or group based on religion. How the Army attempts to eliminate religious discrimination is through the practice of religious accommodation. AR 600-20 instructs Commanders to preserve the Soldier's individual rights to observe the tenets of his or her respective religious faith. Commanders are to accommodate these practices unless they will have an adverse effect on the readiness, cohesion, morale, safety or health of the Soldier or unit.
