The Abu Ghraib prison tortures, classified rendition operations, kidnapping foreign nationals suspected of terrorist ties, and recently revealed secret Central Intelligence Agency prisons, all point to a new aggressive level of American interrogation. Is it possible that torture is an acceptable tactic in a conflict with an uncivilized enemy? Under what circumstances would unusually aggressive methods of motivation be acceptable among nations today or to the judgment of history?
