This paper will focus on the 1/7 CAV and the battle at LZ X-ray during the Vietnam War in 1965. It will also discuss how the United States military has developed ways of dealing with insurgency through counterinsurgency operations fueled by lessons learned during our great military history. Military history is filled with stories and accounts of great courage and victory. These victories were not achieved without the blood, sweat and tears of our brothers and sisters in arms. The actions of the brave souls in the United States Military and the sacrifices they made demand our attention. Those who died in battle will not have died in vain. We are free only because of their actions on the battlefields of the past. Learning from these Soldiers and from their successes and failures is crucial to achieving victories on today's battlefield. Leaders' success on today's battlefield is enhanced by studying military history.
