For five months in the year 2006 Special Forces Operational Detachment Alpha (ODA) 361 lead a three hundred man indigenous force throughout the central-eastern border region of Afghanistan. In the early months of Operation Enduring Freedom, United States Special Forces relied heavily on the use of indigenous forces known as Afghan Militia Forces (AMF) as a force multiplier. This paper will cover some of the ways in which ODA 361 endeavored to maintain a viable indigenous force. The winning of the trust and respect of the AMF was foremost and was woven into every action and encounter with the AMF. Covered in this paper are some of the general rules and methods ODA 361 used to organize, train, equip, supply, house, and pay a three hundred man indigenous force. ODA 361 and their forces operated from, A-Camp Harriman, near the town of Orgun-E in Paktika Province approximately 20 kilometers from the Pakistani border from early April through the end of August 2002.
