Histories of prior insurgent wars provide insight of lessons learned and apply today in the counterinsurgency of Iraq and Afghanistan. By studying the previous battles of counterinsurgencies, the United States Military avoids the pitfalls of past mistakes on the battlefield. Our soldiers acquire knowledge of cultural and society norms of the insurgency making the U.S. Military counterinsurgency more agile adapting to the threat. This paper analyzes the counterinsurgency from the American Revolutionary War and the Philippine Insurrection. It illustrates how these battles are similar to the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.
