Topic statement. The First Sergeant, occupies the most important noncommissioned officer position in the United States Army. He is not only a leader and manager but wears many other hats in the performance of his duties. These facts are disputed by few but most will agree that improvements must be made in the recruiting and developing of the First Sergeant. Discussion. With the changing of times and career development schooling, an understanding of duties and responsibilities and a better understanding of good values and ethics are a must in the development of a First Sergeant. Conclusion. As a role model, the qualities that a First Sergeant must display are those of competence, resourcefulness, fairness and a hard understanding of human nature. He should set high, but attainable standards, not only for himself, but for his entire company. The First Sergeant should epitomize what every professional soldier should be.
