Hitler pioneered the use of airborne operations during World War II (WWII) and he enjoyed several decisive victories early in the war. After he defeated France, Poland, and upper Europe, he turned to the Mediterranean, a vital strategic channel to Africa and the underbelly of Europe. After a gruesome battle at Crete, Hitler abandoned large scale airborne operations. Hitler never conquered the Mediterranean strongholds of Gibraltar and Malta and they remained under British control. In addition, they lost hold on Northern Africa to the allies. Had Hitler continued to use airborne tactics, he could have gained control of these three important strategic areas and would have controlled the Mediterranean.
