This study analyzes and compares two historical cases, Operation Jubilee (1942) and Operation Overlord (1944). The cases highlight the lessons carried forward to achieve success during what Prime Minister Winston Churchill called "the most difficult and complicated operation ever to take place." Learning from the August 19, 1942 catastrophic tragedy on the Normandy port town of Dieppe had a positive cognitive impact toward developing an operational approach for the Normandy invasion that took place on June 6, 1944, ultimately leading to the Allied victory in Europe. This study illustrates the powerful context historical cases provide for modern or emergent military concepts that will impact the future operational environment.
