The purpose of this book is to investigate the reactions of a belligerent nation which finds itself threatened with exhaustion as a result of a war of long duration, and to demonstrate the methods of war available to a nation possessing great superiority of means. The author bases the first part of this investigation upon the Gettysburg campaign of the American Civil War and the second part on Grant's operations in 1864. These two campaigns are described in some detail and the political and economic background which caused them to be undertaken, developed, as well as some of the strategic aspects of the operations.
