In making this study the writer has considered those historical examples of engagements in which a commander placed a portion of his force to constrain the enemy along his front, and maneuvered the balance against the flank and rear, deep enough, so that lines of advance of the two forces, (containing and encircling) did not conflict, and that the force moving against the flank and rear, was free from any influence of fire from the hostile position.
