In this study no reference will be made to records of the use of smoke in naval engagements nor will any consideration be given to the use of toxic smokes by either land or naval forces. Where historical examples have been found indicating that the existence of uncontrolled natural fog, haze, or mist has had a direct bearing upon military operations, same will be commented upon.
