This study investigates the joint deployment and rapid distribution tenet of focused logistics and its capability to project forces and equipment into a theater of operations in support of the joint force commander of 2010. The thesis is a comparison study of the force projection capabilities and accomplishments of Operation Desert Shield with the projected capabilities of the year 2010. The United States is becoming increasingly involved around the globe, but its military potential is not keeping pace. Peacetime operations tempo has never been higher. America's shrinking force, in contrast to increased diplomatic commitments around the globe, has created a dichotomy of policy and means. With a reduced forward presence, the United States must enhance its ability to move the continental based force. This study focuses on the force projection triad of airlift, sealift, and prepositioned equipment. It emphasizes the need for a force projection structure that is capable of providing rapid and sustained support. Force projection for the United States military is the responsibility of the United States Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM). This study evaluates the capabilities of USTRANSCOM, its component commands (Military Sealift Command, Air Mobility Command, and Military Traffic Management Command), and the civilian maritime sector.
