"This book is not presented to the public as a treatise on strategy, but [was] intended solely for the use of the student officers at the U. S. Infantry and Cavalry School in connection with a course of lectures. Many features that would be required in an ordinary text-book are accordingly omitted. The basis of this work is that portion of Hamley's "Operations of War" relating to the subject of strategy. Some of the descriptions of campaigns are taken verbatim from Hamley; others are revised and rewritten either wholly or in part; and others again are entirely new." Campaigns include Novara, Moreau, Vicksburg, Waterloo, among others, as well as passage of the Danube, Ticino, Bull Run, etc.
