Burgundy cloth face mask with curved top and shaped to fit over the nose of user. At each end are two black elastic loops to loop around the ears. On the front left side is a Munson Health Center crest (hand painted). The crest has a yellow background, curve at the bottom with (7) triangular points on top. A green medical cross is in the middle. Inside the cross is a red and yellow building and a white medical cross. Along the curved bottom "CONSTANT DEDICATED CARE" is written in paint. On the right side "FLATTEN/THE/CURVE" are handwritten in white paint. The bottom right "COVID-19" is handwritten in paint. A black and red line is painted across the mask, starting from the left side and crossing to the right in a squiggle formation. The lines go in between the "FLATTEN THE CURVE" motto and comes to a flat line. On the interior the artist signed it "Edie Cotton" The mask has a black thread around the edges (sewn). ARTIST STATEMENT: Edith L. Cotton, Medical Staff Manager, Munson Army Health Center, DOD Civilian, US Army Veteran. A worldwide pandemic (COVID-19) impacted the Leavenworth/Fort Leavenworth Community with the spread of the coronavirus. Shelter-in-place and social-distancing mandates were put into place. During this epidemic there was a severe shortage of protective face masks for health care providers on the front line, as well as the general population. I [and others in my community] wanted to assist, so we pulled out our sewing machines in an effort to mass produce protective masks. I joined a group of women in producing masks that would be donated to the local homeless shelter. The mask were made of washable 100% COTTON, and included a slot to insert additional disposable filters. Due to the shortage of elastic, the straps were made of t-shirt material. On 23 April 2020 Munson Army Health Center announced a competition for staff to create face masks. I decided to join in on the fun, so I submitted an entry of a custom designed face mask. My entry won in the category of "Most Artistic". The mask I designed was to honor the healthcare professionals and civilian staff [at Munson] who were doing their part in the fight to lower the number of coronavirus cases in our community. In the 25+ years I've worked at Munson, the motto "Constant Dedicated Care" (located on the health center's crest), clearly defines what the staff stands for. Munson staff members were Dedicated in their efforts to "FLATTEN THE CURVE"; hopeful that there would be a decrease in the number of diagnosed coronavirus cases (as illustrated by the flattened line on the mask).
