Bronze medal,1 1/4" in diameter with a wreath with cross inside and castles at opposite ends of cross intersection. Center ring surrounds image of two soldiers and kneeling woman. Reverse has center ring containing fourteen stars with "UNITED" underneath. The center ring is encircled by another ring containing nineteen symbols. At the intersection of the corners of the cross are castles. On the front side above the 1/2" ring joining the ribbon to the medal is an anchor with chain, cannon, rifle and sword measuring approximately 7/8" x 2/8". Above ths is a rectangular clasp colored gold. A metal colonel's insignia is set on a strip of black in the center of the rectangle. The top pin clasp is an eagle on a shield set atop a u-shaped wreath of laurel leaves. The ribbon is red and white striped silk (eight red horizontal stripes). In the upper right of the ribbon is a 3/8" x 1/2" field of blue with thirteen white stars in the pattern 3-2-3-2-3. 81.2.2A: Black leather case with snap, measuring 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" when closed, 6" x9" when open. Top and bottom over flaps lined with blue silk. Center panel for medal is blue velvet 2 1/4" x 4 1/4" with raised tab. Awarded to Dick Shanafelt, a member of 1st Voluntary Cavalry, Theodore Roosevelt's Rough Riders.
