Made of a solid piece of wood, the canteen has a round body with four extension feet and an eared top. Two of the feet have been notched and drilled to convert to a more comfortable carrying position. Body has two sets of concentric ring designs on each face. Faces have been painted orange, inside rings black with green dot outer border, outside rings green with black dot inner border. Sides have roses with leaves and a branched green design. Large center bung (used to hollow out canteen) has warped and no longer fits. Ears have horizontal fluting and crudely drilled holes. Top is bound and inner faced with steel. Inner facing is threaded. Cap is wooden with a threaded post and button finial. Non-issue canteens were common in the Civil War period. This one is unusual in that, although a common pattern, it has been decorated and modified to a shoulder sling.
