Blowback action magazine submachine gun, Thompson M1A1, with all the standard features for this weapon. Stocks are of rough-finished walnut, while all the metal is gray Parkerized. First manufactured in series production in 1928, the Thompson went on to become the most common of the Allied SMGs of the early World War II years. As production increased during World War II, the need for a cheaper model was realized. In April 1942, the SMG Cal .45 M1 appeared. This model did away with several expensive refinements. Slightly modified, the gun became the M1A1 and remained as such until production ceased In 1944. Over 1.5 million were produced. Though accurate and reliable, the Thompson was heavy and still expensive to manufacture even in its M1A1 form.
