From 1974 annual report's Summary (page x): The Secretary of the Army, on 26 Mar 74, announced plans to realign and combine BMD management under a single organization. This direction was implemented on 20 May 74, with the U.S. Army SAFEGUARD System Organization re-designated the the U.S. Army Ballistic Missile Defense Organization (BMDO) and the U.S. Army SAFEGUARD System Command renamed the Ballistic Missile Defense System Command (BMDSCOM). The assigned mission of the BMDO is to deploy and operate the SAFEGUARD System, execute the Site Defense program, conduct research and development in advanced BMD technology, and manage the Kwajalein Missile Range (KMR). Operation of the KMR as a National Range was assigned to the BMD Program Manager (BMDPM). The Advanced Ballistic Missile Defense Agency (ABMDA), Washington, D.C. was discontinued; ABMDA, Huntsville was placed under command of the BMDPM and re-designated the BMD Advanced Technology Center (BMD ATC).
