United States Southern Command (USSOUTHCOM), within its more than 7 1/2 million square mile area of responsibility, is advancing a broad range of defense programs in Latin America vital to the security of the Western Hemisphere. Located in the Canal Zone, near the city of Balboa, U.S. Southern Command Headquarters directs U.S. military efforts throughout Central and South America. From Part I. General; A. Background 2). Comprising USSOUTHCOM in the Canal Zone are the three component commands, U.S. Army Forces Southern Command, U.S. Navy Southern Command, and U.S. Air Forces Southern Command. The command and operational control of the Commander in Chief, U.S. Southern Command, extends over all U.S. military forces, except service attaches, in Central (less Mexico) and South America. In June 1963, the name of Caribbean Command was changed to U.S. Southern Command, and the grade of Commander in Chief as advanced to general, in conjunction with the increased emphasis on Latin America.
