From Foreword: The 2019 novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic that swept across the globe in early 2020 threatened the national security of the United States. The U.S. Army soon became involved in the fight against the virus. The service fought on two fronts: it assisted citizens and supported civil authorities throughout the nation at the same time as it strove to continue its missions and protect itself and its soldiers from the threat of COVID-19. At the Center of Military History, members of the Field Programs and Historical Services Directorate ensured that the operation received historical coverage and took the necessary steps to prepare a brief history of the Army response. One major step was to collect and preserve a record of pandemic-related Army operations in the continental United States.
