From Foreword: FY91 was a year that saw the 420th Engineer Brigade preparing to go to war. In early August, 1990 Iraq invaded and occupied Kuwait in South West Asia (SWA). At the request of the king of Saudi Arabia, a United Nations peace keeping force was quickly assembled and sent to Saudi Arabia. The United States responded and activating hundreds of National Guard and Reserve units. Four units from the 420th Engineer Brigade were ultimately activated and sent to Saudi Arabia: D/52 Engineer Battalion, 808th Engineer Company, 348th Engineer Detachment and D/299 Engineer Battalion. -- From Chapter I. Organization: The 420th Engineer Brigade is composed of USAR engineer units in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, and New Mexico. The BDE is organized into two groups and two separate companies under BDE HQ control. All the units are composed of reserve members, but are operated by a cadre of Active Guard Reserves (AGR), Civilian Technicians, and Active Component (AC) Army advisors.
