Al-Banna favored renovation and reform, and he opposed mindless compliance with the rulings of the early jurists. He encouraged going straight to the “foundational text”, namely the Quran, for guidance, and he maintained that anything that was outside the established and incontrovertible articles of faith could be, and, indeed, should be, submitted to rational critique and the processes of reason with an eye to promoting the general welfare of the community.
