Examines the history of artillery schools and artillery education in the United States from before the U.S. Revolutionary War until World War I.

Includes black and white photographs of officers at the School of Fire for Field Artillery during the 1910s. The last chapter on page 72, titled "The course during the World War" has a handwritten note under the title: "(by Peter B. Kyne)". This chapter was written by the author Peter Bernhard Kyne (1880-1957), who served with Company L, 14th U.S. Infantry in the Philippines from 1898 to 1899, and later was a captain of Battery A of the California National Guard 144th Field Artillery Regiment during World War I. It is adapted from his article published in the November 9, 1918 edition of the Saturday Evening Post, page 15, titled "The Artillery Mill at Old Fort Sill: How Uncle Sam is Training his Field Artillery Officers". Handwritten note on back of title page leaf: "See Field Artillery Journal v.28: 453-463 N'38" Contains handwritten pagination and corrections.
