From 1991 supplement: Summary: This fiscal year marked the first-ever mobilization and activation of 108th Division soldiers in its 45-year history. -- During Operation Desert Shield 73 soldiers assigned to 108th Division units volunteered for duty. Then in January, when Operation Desert Shield became Operation Desert Storm, another 260 members of the 108th Division were called to active duty at Fort Jackson. Soldiers assigned to three 108th Division battalions were issued activation orders to assist with mobilizing and training soldiers and units slated for duty in Southwest Asia.
