From 1984 supplement's Executive Summary: Fiscal year 1984 was characterized by quiet excellence for the 9th Infantry Division (Motorized). The Division's mission continued to be twofold. To train and maintain a combat read division prepared to go and fight anywhere in the world. Secondly, the 9th ID (MTZ) continued to refine tactics and equipment to be become the only division in the U.S. Army which retained the deployability of a light division but has sufficient firepower and mobility to fight across the spectrum of conflict.
