Third Brigade inactivated on 16 September 1992. -- From Third Brigade 1992 Annual History Review Overview: In 1992 the Brigade continued to serve as one of the major subordinate commands of the 2d Infantry Division and controlling headquarters for the Western Corridor. Until October 1991, the Brigade mission was to: Secure US sector of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and be prepared to conduct DMZ contingency operations. On order, upload, deploy to tactical assembly areas and conduct offensive or defensive combat operations. In this capacity, the Brigade had operational control of all battalions of the 2d Infantry Division while they conducted the DMZ mission. On 23 October the Brigade received inactivation orders. Department of the Army issued Permanent Orders 174-7 inactivating Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHC) effective 16 September 1992. With inactivation nearly a year away, the Brigade continued to train and maintain a combat ready posture if hostilities occurred on the Korean Peninsula. As the year progressed, the staff and HHC began preparing to turn over Camp Howze and control of the Western Corridor to Engineer Brigade, 2d Infantry Division.
