From Executive Summary: This report examines a wide range of economic and security issues based on a synthesis of facts gleaned from thousands of reports and articles, several relevant conferences, and numerous interviews with subject maters experts, in an attempt to bring into a coherent whole the many interrelated defense and economic concerns affecting the United States during the current post-Cold War defense drawdown. Among other issues, this report addresses: information-age economic restructuring; structural issues affecting the United State' economic case; issues resulting from defense industrial reductions; US international interests; US force levels and arms transfer imperatives; the realities of increasing future foreign dependency in US defense procurement; and arms control and regional stability concerns.
