"The Battalion operation hereinafter reported was part of the airborne Operation MARKET whereby it was intended to create an airborne-protected corridor from the Belgium-Holland border to Arnhem, through which the column of the XXX Corps, 2nd British Army, could move across the Neder Rhine and up its right bank into Germany. Bn 1, 501st Parachute Infantry, 101st Division, was dropped North of the WILLEMS VAART Canal to seize and hold that part of the corridor lying immediately west and south of Veghel, Holland. The operations of all of the American Battalions were covered in the same detail as 501-1 and the tactical story is complete. However, for sustained action and results, the operation of 501-1 is an exemplary study and embraces some unique tactical values."
