Alphonse keeps stumbling upon corpses, both of strangers and of ones he loves. He drops his knife on the subway, only to find it sticking out of a dying man, and death seems to stalk him in bizarrely surreal ways therest of the movie. He reports the stranger's demise to his police inspector neighbor, who reacts with casual apathy. This duo then meets up with a confessed killer, and the three of them embark on a series of darkly comic incidents that overthrow any notion of morality or decency.
